OUR MISSION

The PRIMA Longevity Policy Institute is a non-profit independent organisation that transforms scientific insights into meaningful contributions for political and societal decision-making. We work at the intersection of science, public health and regulation, focusing on strengthening prevention, improving health equity, and ensuring the responsible governance of innovation.

From Personal experience to Institutional REsponsibility
2011
The founding of PRIMA gGmbH – Prevention & Innovation in Medicine and Ageing, the Longevity Policy Institute – in November 2025 was not a spontaneous idea, but the logical outcome of a long inner and professional journey. It marks the moment when a personal conviction evolved into an institution that assumes responsibility and aims to act with long-term impact. This development began as early as 2011 with a very fundamental question. In his LL.M. dissertation, “How is the right to health shaped by our concept of normality?”, Alexander explored why we accept ageing as an apparently unchangeable normality, while we rarely think of health as a lasting, shapeable right. This theoretical work was less an abstract academic exercise than a struggle with a simple but uncomfortable insight: if we file ageing away as something purely “natural”, we take away our own political and societal room for manoeuvre.
First Steps: European Year for Active Ageing (2012)
In 2012 – the European Year for Active Ageing and Solidarity between Generations – Alexander had the opportunity to translate these convictions into concrete political work. As an accredited parliamentary assistant in the European Parliament and a programme coordinator at the Heinrich Böll Foundation, he was directly involved in the civil society coordination of the European Year for Active Ageing. The Year was an ambitious European project: hundreds of initiatives at all levels were intended to raise awareness for active ageing, make the contribution of older people visible and strengthen solidarity between generations. During this time, Alexander learned how European politics works – and where its limits are. It became clear that symbolic years and well‑intentioned declarations can generate attention, but often remain without lasting impact if they are not followed by stable structures, institutional anchoring and sustained policy follow‑up. This experience shaped his later understanding of what is needed to not only call for better health and prevention, but to actually implement them.
From Ideas to Action: Heales (2014)
Out of this theoretical work and these early political experiences grew, at an early stage, the desire not to stop at publications and lectures. In 2014, Alexander founded the German branch of Heales – Healthy Life Extension Society – to bring the idea of longer healthy lifespans into the public sphere, build alliances and develop international networks. In practice, however, it quickly became clear: idealism and civil society engagement reach their limits when there is no stable bridge into politics, public administration and institutions – precisely the kind of bridge that PRIMA as a Longevity Policy Institute would later aim to build.
Insight into Political Reality: German Bundestag (2021–2025)
A major shift in perspective came with Alexander’s work in the German Bundestag from 2021 onwards. As head of office and scientific adviser to a Member of Parliament, he gained direct insight into political processes, priorities and constraints. Behind the scenes it became evident how much knowledge already exists on prevention, healthy ageing and longevity – and how rarely this knowledge is actually used in a strategic way. What was missing was not research, but a structured interface between science, policy‑making and societal implementation – a role at the core of PRIMA’s mission as a Longevity Policy Institute.
Lived Experience as a Catalyst (2025)
In parallel, there was a deeply personal experience that brought all these questions together in an almost intimate way: in 2025, Alexander’s grandmother celebrated her 105th birthday – mentally clear, physically remarkably fit and embedded in family and social relationships. This experience made tangible what statistics and studies can only suggest: high age and quality of life do not have to be opposites. They can be the result of long‑term prevention, good medical care, social connectedness and supportive framework conditions – exactly the kind of conditions PRIMA wants to help design as a Longevity Policy Institute.
The Founding of PRIMA – Longevity Policy Institute (November 2025)
From the combination of these two levels – structural analysis on the one hand and the personally lived possibility of healthy ageing on the other – a clear conclusion emerged: there is a need for an independent, reliable institution dedicated precisely to this bridge‑building work. An organisation that consolidates scientific evidence, creates political linkages and helps shape public debate in such a way that the right to health does not exist only in documents, but is reflected in concrete policies and programmes. Against this background, PRIMA gGmbH – Prevention & Innovation in Medicine and Ageing, the Longevity Policy Institute – was established as a non‑profit limited liability company in November 2025. PRIMA sees itself as a bridging institution between science, politics and civil society. At its core lies the conviction that prevention and healthy ageing must not be side issues, but guiding principles of modern health policy – and that the right to health is only taken seriously if we commit to realising it in very old age as well.
